Inside sources at the Obama campaign today revealed to The Garlic reporters that President Obama has spent 97.7% of his total available re-election campaign funds. This leaves only 2.3%, or about $10 million, to run his campaign between now and the Election Day in November.
As the Republican selection process winds down, with Mitt Romney all but certain to be the nominee, both camps are regrouping and preparing to start the election campaign proper. The Obama camp is starting off on a cautious foot since they are 2.7% over budget; having expected to have a full 5% left to see them through to November. “We were caught somewhat by surprise by the performance of Ron Paul, we expected the Republican scare campaign to bury him much earlier.” said the Obama staffer.
Backpedalling from the oversight, the Obama campaign poured an extra $11 million into Romney coffers to help ensure his nomination. “We’ve fought long and hard for Mitt, it’s a relief to see him finally sew it up.” All were not in harmony in the Democratic camp however. A relative large faction of Democrats remains wary. Democratic congressman Barney Frank summed it up – “We would sleep a lot better at night if we had $20 million, or even $30 million left to continue our Romney-for-President campaign. We are concerned that $10 million may not keep him in the public eye enough. If people start to forget who he is, all bets are off”.
Vice President Biden remained unfazed and upbeat. “The President and his family will be leaving for their vacation in South America as planned, and will return on the election day as planned. We see no need to change course now.”
Current polls show the two parties in a virtual dead heat, with Romney losing approximately 0.5% after each public appearance. President Obama is, and will remain, unavailable for comment.
