Mr Montek Ahluwalia, the Chairman of the Indian Planning Commission, speaking at the World Economic Forum, announced that he expected the growth rate of India’s economy to decline because of the anti-corruption campaign of Mr Anna Hazare. The campaign is likely to lead to a decline in the level of corruption in the country. Mr Ahluwalia noted that it would now not be possible for organisers of major events like the Commonwealth Games to continue to support the economy, for example by buying high quality $80 toilet rolls and go on several overseas trips to inspect the cities where earlier events were held. He noted that corruption in India is the lubricant for the economy and lack of lubrication is likely to slow the economy.
