Although most people have a cell phone that tells time, they also have something redundant strapped to their wrist. People are therefore starting to realise that they don’t really need a wrist watch which is a single function device. If a wrist watch was to be useful it should include at least some of the iPhone functionality as shown in the image above. It will then save people carrying the iPhone around.
The announcement has started considerable controversy about the relative utility of a wrist watch and the phone. Some people believe they have feelings for the wrist watch since it carries memories, tradition, and can last a lifetime or two. Cell phones on the other hand become obsolete every year or two years. Furthermore it has been suggested that one can look at the wrist watch sneakily which is much harder to do with a cell phone.
“Reports on the death of the wristwatch have been greatly exaggerated,” said Stauer President Mike Bisceglia. “Yes, you can check the time on your smartphone, but nothing can match the timeless appeal of a wristwatch when it comes to defining a style and sending a message.”
Like any product out there, a wrist watch cell phone has advantages and disadvantages. Clearly, they are a very easy way to reduce the likelihood that you’ll forget your cell phone, misplace it throughout the day, or have it stolen from your desk, purse, or from the table where you laid it. When it’s securely attached to your body, it’s also less prone to damage from dropping and so forth.
Switzerland has therefore decided to stop manufacturing the conventional wrist watches. Switzerland will now focus on designing a wrist watch that will include all the functionality of the iPhone with some of the icons displayed on the wrist band. Such a wrist watch should be available in another 15 years.
