Most American voters believe that the ongoing battle between Obama Democrats and Tea Party Republicans needs to stop. The fight waged by the Republicans against President Obama during 2011 has resulted in the Congress not passing legislation proposed by the administration, giving the Democrats nightmares.
Since November 2010 the republicans have been looking at the top of their game. There have been a number of casualties in the battle on both sides including Mike Ross, a Blue Dog Democrat from Arkansas, who is going to bail out of the House at the end of the year. In fact, a total of 15 Democrats and 10 Republicans are leaving the House. Another 6 Democrats and 3 Republicans are leaving the Senate. It is therefore clear that there have been more Democrat casualties then Republican casualties.
Kofi Annan is expected to develop a ceasefire plan which is likely to include the following five points:
- Both Democrats and Republicans commit to work with Kofi Annan in an inclusive political process to address the legitimate aspirations and concerns of both parties.
- Both parties commit to stop the fighting and achieve urgently an effective supervised cessation of fighting in all its forms.
- Kofi Annan will work with President Obama and the Republican Leaders to bring about a sustained cessation of political fighting in all its forms.
- Both parties will ensure freedom of movement throughout the country for all politicians and journalists.
- Both parties will respect freedom of association and the right to demonstrate peacefully as guaranteed by the Constitution.
