Mr Mitt Romney has suggested new ways of helping people on the East Coast of the USA who suffered during the superstorm Sandy. At least thirty-eight people died in the storm and thousands of people were driven out from their homes and millions were without power.

Mr Romney has suggested that the people who have suffered should be allowed to go bankrupt. Furthermore, Mr Romney noted that people should seek a privately financed managed bankruptcy, with the government providing guarantees to their loans. A company like Bain Capital may be able to provide private finance to such unfortunate people.

Mr Romney and Mr Ryan strongly oppose Mr Obama’s promise of providing Federal help to people who have suffered. In their view, the Federal government must not spend more money given the huge debt burden that the nation already has. Mr Ryan noted that there was no justification for President Obama’s decision to declare a pre-disaster state of emergency in a number of states and then signing major disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey, which made it easier for people to access Federal assistance.

Mr Romney has also noted that the reason for Mr Chris Christie heaping praise on Obama’s handling of the storm may have been political. The Governor may be thinking about the 2016 Presidential election. A Christie presidential bid would have had no chance if Mr Romney was in the White House, seeking re-election in 2016. That may be why Governor Christie noted that “The President has been outstanding in this and it’s been very good working with him. It’s been wonderful.”
