Police arrested Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently when she was not far from a group of angry protesters. The ugly arrest of the Prime Minister marred the national holiday, Australia Day.
It has been reported that the Prime Minister lost one of her favorite shoes in the ordeal but was unhurt during the arrest. At least 50 police – some with riot gear – were deployed during the arrest. Video footage on national television showed the prime minister falling and losing a shoe as police officers dragged her to a waiting car amid angry scenes.
Some newspapers have called the arrest story a kind of Cinderella story turned on its head, a combustible mixture of race, social status and the leader.
A representative for the Prime Minister said Ms. Gillard was uninjured and declined further comment on the incident.
