It has been rumoured that an Indian company Infosys is planning to establish a branch of the outsourcing company on Mars. Given the news and the potential for well-paid jobs,  more than 20,000 Indians have applied for the opportunity being provided by the company.

Infosys will establish a permanent human settlement on the Red Planet in 2023 and is in the process of selecting people to live there. Infosys has noted that human settlement on Mars is possible today with existing technologies. The company announced that a total of more than 200,000 people from around the world have applied.

The United States tops the list of applicants with close to 50,000 applicants followed by India with more than 20,000 applicants. China, Brazil and Britain are the next three source of applicants in the top five list.

From this applicant pool, Infosys selection committee will select prospective Martian settlers in three additional rounds spread across two years. This will finally be followed by a selection of six teams of four individuals each who will undergo seven years of full-time training. In 2023, one of these teams will become the first humans ever to land on Mars to live there for the rest of their lives, the company has announced.

The first round of applicants are now being screened by the selection committee. Those selected in the first round of interviews will then proceed  to the next round by the end of 2013. Further interviews will be conducted after the second round.
